Meet the developers

Seagreen is Scotland’s largest offshore wind farm owned by SSE Renewables (49%) and TotalEnergies (51%). Seagreen became operational in October 2023 with 114 of the originally consented 150 turbines.

SSE Renewables led the development and construction of the joint venture project, supported by TotalEnergies, and will operate Seagreen throughout its operational lifetime on behalf of the partners.

The Seagreen 1A project, also a joint venture partnership between TotalEnergies and SSE Renewables, is a proposal to build the remaining 36 of the 150 consented offshore wind turbines adjacent to Seagreen Offshore Wind Farm.  This has required a separate grid connection through the Cockenzie substation.

About TotalEnergies in the UK

In the UK we are a leading oil and gas operator, operating around 30% of the UK Continental Shelf’s gas production, with average daily production of 142,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2023.

We have invested in several offshore wind developments in the UK which will have the capacity to deliver over 5GW of renewable power this decade, including Seagreen (1.1GW) which became fully operational in October 2023, West of Orkney (2GW) and Outer Dowsing (1.5 GW). Seagreen 1A

The ‘Seagreen 1A’ project is the infrastructure required to connect the remaining 36 offshore turbines to the grid at the Cockenzie substation.

In October 2019, SWEL applied to National Grid, the national electricity transmission network operator, for a further grid connection for the remaining 36 turbines.  As there is restricted additional grid capacity available at Tealing, National Grid provided a connection offer at the ScottishPower substation, adjacent to the former Cockenzie Power station in East Lothian, in order to connect the remaining 36 turbines.  SWEL has accepted this connection offer.

The site is located in the Energy Zone of the former Cockenzie power station site next to the existing ScottishPower building on Edinburgh Road, Cockenzie.

The cable route at Cockenzie will follow the shortest and least intrusive route to the new proposed substation building. The details of this will be finalised as work on the project progresses.

Wherever possible, we proactively consult with our local communities, local businesses, elected members and other key stakeholders to receive feedback and help shape the plans. We work with local media and identify multiple channels to help promote our projects and engage with as wide an audience as possible, in the planning and delivery of our important programme. 

14 years of development

In 2010, the Crown Estate awarded Seagreen Wind Energy Limited the exclusive development rights for the Firth of Forth Zone of the UK's Round 3 offshore wind farm development programme.

The Zone is located over 27km from the Angus coastline and 66km from the East Lothian coastline, covering an area of around 2,850km2 in the outer Firth of Forth.

Seagreen and subsequently Seagreen 1A have worked closely with stakeholders and undertaken extensive surveys and assessments to develop a number of projects within the Zone.  The Zone is being developed in three distinct phases:

  • Seagreen (operational) – 114 turbines at a capacity of 1,075MW

  • Seagreen 1A (in development) – Up to 36 turbines at a capacity of up to 500MW

  • Berwick Bank Wind Farm (formerly Seagreen 2&3) (in development) – Up to 4.1GW. Click here for more information
